How to test exterior paint samples before committing

Test exterior paint colors at the right size, location, and times of day before ordering paint for the whole house.

Narrow the field before buying samples

Use chips and visualization to eliminate unsuitable undertones and compare complete schemes. Sampling every interesting color is expensive and visually confusing. Aim to bring two or three wall directions, plus their trim candidates, into the physical test.

Make samples large and movable

Paint two coats on rigid sample boards using the intended product and finish when practical. Leave a border so the existing wall color does not directly contaminate every edge. Movable boards let you compare the same paint beside roofing, masonry, windows, and different elevations.

  • Keep wall and trim samples touching when judging the combination.
  • Move samples into both direct sun and the deepest normal shade.
  • View from close range and from the street or primary approach.

Observe before deciding

Check morning, midday, late afternoon, and overcast conditions. If one candidate only works for a brief hour, decide whether that hour represents how the house is normally experienced. Label every board clearly and record the exact brand, line, color code, and finish.

When the choice is close, test fewer finalists for longer rather than introducing more colors. The final sample is also a useful reference for the painter and future touch-ups.
